haiti, pearl of the antilles
Located in the Caribbean, Haiti (AKA Ayiti in Haitian Creole or Kreyol) is home to an estimated 12 million people and is situated on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic bordering to the east. Considered the poorest developing country in the Western Hemisphere with the average wage of $1 per day, Haiti scores the lowest in regards to income, education, and life expectancy.
On January 12, 2010, Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake, leaving approximately 310,000 people dead and 1.6 million people homeless, many still living in tents to this day. Unable to fully recover from the Earthquake of 2010 and the subsequent cholera outbreak, Haiti would again experience devastation as Hurricane Matthew swept through this already fragile nation in the fall of 2016. In its wake, Matthew claimed the lives of over 3000 Haitians and wiped out vegetable and fruit crops along with greater than 350,000 farm animals. Many Haitians lost their homes, forcing some to find shelter in caves in the mountainside. Fast forward five years and Haiti would experience another prolific earthquake of 7.2 magnitude in western Haiti along the Massif de la Hotte Mountains as well as be ravished by numerous aftershocks and Tropical Storm Grace, claiming the lives of more than1400 people, injuring greater than 6000, and leaving homeless approximately 30,000.
Despite the onslaught of challenges faced by Haiti, and the political strife which plagues progression, the hope for a brighter future remains strong among its people, especially with the young. Communities are coming together to help their neighbor, and organizations, such as TDRP, are partnering to ensure success.
By creating sustainable opportunities for the people of Haiti, initiatives of TDRP include, but are not limited too, healthcare, education, nutrition/agriculture, and housing. These opportunities, coupled with collaborative efforts with local missionaries, Haitian communities will be able to thrive without dependency upon outside relief.
Partnering with TDRP ensures continuation of programming and employment of staff, development of new opportunities to further the community's growth, and allowing further expansion to impact numerous communities in a positive manner.
