Over 75% of the population of Nan Citron is illiterate, a handful having received any formal education and most only up to grade three. This rural farming community is hungry for education and employment, and TDRP is meeting their needs one student at a time.
In 2017, TDRP began its first educational program, ASPIRE. Over the past five years, 165 adult students have enrolled in one of the three levels to learn basic skills of reading, writing, and math and in January 2022, TDRP added Level IV to its curriculum. Many of our adult learners have obtained skills to be successful, such as in writing their name for the first time.
The success of ASPIRE has been incredible to say the least. One student, approximately 65 years old, shared with the staff of TDRP, "today, I was able to write my name for the very first time on a legal document." WOW, truly a life-changing moment!
